Artist Bio
I started painting at St Martin’s School of Art in the mid to late 1980’s and over the next 30 years took various detours namely working as a secondary art teacher and gaining a Masters in Art Psychotherapy in 2008. I am currently on MFA at London Met.
-My work merges conscious and subconscious thought, memory, emotion and symbolism. I use the picture plane to develop ‘archetypes’ which are areas of markmaking and colour which coalesce and stand alone on the picture plane. For me the constant flux between ‘archetypes’ and spaces between, inner and outer, and the void, have a personal significance. I developed this style of working from experiential art groups whilst studying at Goldsmiths College from 2005-8. I am trying to develop a ‘language’ from markmaking and textures which somehow connects the artist, viewer and artwork in a relational triangulation. All my paintings are instinctual, the process of making is a way of connecting my interiority with the outside world. I am interested in how gesture and mark making can evoke emotion and materiality. All the paintings here are made using household paint, acrylic and acrylic ink. By using household paint, acrylic and acrylic ink the interior and exterior is further implied, the universal and the private, the ‘masking’ self and the unknown within. For me, abstract painting using a process format can create a space where narrative is undefined and relational, with many connections and interpretations for the viewer.
